How do Social Security spousal benefits work?

Quick answer

A spouse can receive up to 50% of the higher earner's full retirement age benefit, even if they have little or no work history. To qualify, you must be at least 62 (or caring for a qualifying child) and your spouse must have filed for benefits. Spousal benefits don't reduce the primary earner's benefit.
